Robert Vano
photographer
Robert Vano is a prominent Czech and Slovak photographer based in Prague. Born in Nové Zámky, Slovakia, to Hungarian parents, he emigrated to the United States in 1967 where he worked as a hairdresser and makeup artist before becoming an assistant to renowned fashion photographers like Horst P. Horst and Giovanni Gastel. He began his independent career in 1984, working in New York, Paris, Milan, and Prague. Vano is widely recognized for his work in fashion photography (for publications such as Vogue, Elle, and Harper's Bazaar) and his pioneering portraiture of the male nude. He is a master of platinum printing and traditional film techniques, often utilizing natural light. In 1995, he settled in Prague, where he served as an art director for the Czech edition of Elle (1996–2003). He received the European Trebbia Award for artistic achievement in 2010.[1,2]
