Roman Buxbaum

author · photographer

Roman Buxbaum is a Swiss visual artist, documentary filmmaker, psychiatrist, and art collector. Born in Prague in 1956, he emigrated to Switzerland at age 12 before settling in Zurich. He studied medicine and received his doctorate in 1982, later becoming a specialist in psychiatry and psychotherapy. Buxbaum is widely recognized for his multidisciplinary exploration of identity, human life, and outsider art. He played a pivotal role in the discovery and preservation of the work of Czech photographer Miroslav Tichý, founding the Tichy Oceán Foundation to support and exhibit Tichý's photographs. His own artistic practice involves performance, sculpture, drawing, and film, often exploring themes of alienation, memory, and the human psyche.[2,3]
