Rudy Kousbroek

Rudy Kousbroek (1929–2010) was a prominent Dutch writer, essayist, and translator known for his intellectual depth and diverse interests. Born in Indonesia to a colonial planter family, he returned to the Netherlands after World War II. He founded the literary magazine Braak with Remco Campert in 1950 and became a significant figure in the 'Vijftigers' movement. Kousbroek was renowned for his essays on aesthetics, sexuality, ethology, technology, and literature, often characterized by a blend of rational passion and melancholic reflection. His work frequently explored themes of memory, human nature, and cultural anthropology. He received numerous awards, including the P.C. Hooft Prize (1975) and the Jan Hanlo Essay Prize (2005).[1]
