Sam Haskins
photographer
Samuel Joseph Haskins (1926–2009) was a British photographer born and raised in South Africa. He began his career as an advertising photographer in Johannesburg in the early 1950s before moving to London in 1968. Haskins is renowned for his pioneering work in figure photography, particularly his trilogy of books published in the 1960s: 'Five Girls' (1962), 'Cowboy Kate & Other Stories' (1964), and 'November Girl' (1967). His style was characterized by a sophisticated use of black-and-white grain, dramatic chiaroscuro lighting, and graphic composition. Beyond his figure studies, he produced significant commercial work for international brands like Asahi Pentax and BMW, and created notable works such as 'Haskins Posters' (1972) and 'African Image' (1967). He was a master of image-making who balanced sensual eroticism with high-art graphic design.[1]
