Stephen Shore

author · photographer

Stephen Shore is an American photographer known for his pioneering use of color in art photography and his images of scenes and objects of the banal. Born in New York City to Jewish parents, he was self-taught and began practicing photography at a young age. He became notable for capturing everyday scenes, vernacular landscapes, and mundane objects with exceptional clarity using large-format cameras. In 1971, Shore became the first living photographer to have a solo exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. His work has significantly shaped the vision of the American landscape and experience. He has been the director of the photography department at Bard College since 1982 and is recognized as one of the leading photographers who established color photography as an art form.[1,4,5,6]
