Susan Lipper

photographer

Susan Lipper is an American photographer based in New York City. She received her MFA in photography from the Yale School of Art in 1983. Her work is characterized by what she describes as 'subjective documentary,' a style that often involves repeated interaction with communities and subjects to create collaborative, theatrical narratives rather than traditional social documentation. For over two decades, Lipper documented the community of Grapevine Hollow in West Virginia, resulting in her notable book 'Grapevine' (1994). Her work is held in major permanent collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Public Library, and the Victoria and Albert Museum.[4,5]
