Thomas Roma

Thomas Roma is an American documentary photographer and author born in Brooklyn, New York. He received a New York State Council for the Arts Fellowship in 1973 and was twice awarded Guggenheim Fellowships (in 1982 and 1991). His work often focuses on urban life, social issues, and cultural landscapes, including his extensive documentation of Sicily, Italy, which began in 1977. Roma has taught photography at prestigious institutions such as Yale, Fordham, Cooper Union, and the School of Visual Arts. In 1996, he became a Professor of Art and Director of the Photography Program at Columbia University School of the Arts. His photographs are held in numerous major collections, including the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago.[1,2]
