Vilém Flusser

author

Vilém Flusser (1920–1991) was a Czech-born Brazilian philosopher, writer, and journalist renowned for his contributions to media studies, communication theory, and the philosophy of language. Born into a family of Jewish intellectuals in Prague, he fled Nazi persecution in 1939, eventually settling in Brazil where he became a citizen. His early work engaged with existentialism and phenomenology, particularly the thought of Martin Heidegger. In his later years, Flusser shifted focus toward the philosophy of communication and artistic production, notably analyzing the 'technical image' and the role of apparatuses in shaping human perception. He explored themes such as the dichotomy between linear writing and photography, the concept of 'homeland' versus 'home,' and the impact of automation on culture. His works are written in multiple languages, including German, Portuguese, English, and French.[1]
