Wijnanda Deroo
author · photographer
Wijnanda Deroo is a Dutch-American artist, photographer, and educator born in 1955 in Zeist, Netherlands. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Arnhem in the late 1970s, where she studied drawing and painting before later pursuing photography. She is primarily known for her evocative photographs of empty interiors and historical spaces, such as abandoned synagogues, Ellis Island, and various locations in New York City and the Netherlands. Her work often explores the intersection of architecture, history, and memory, characterized by a focus on light and symmetry. Deroo moved to New York City in 1989, where she has lived and worked for many years, including an artist's residency at MoMA P.S. 1. She continues to exhibit her work internationally and is a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Arnhem.[1,2,3]
