Willem Hendrik Nagel

Willem Hendrik Nagel (1910–1983) was a Dutch jurist, criminologist, and writer who wrote under the pseudonym J.B. Charles. He studied law in Groningen and worked at the court in Middelburg before becoming involved in the resistance during World War II, where he stole identity documents and gathered intelligence. After the war, he became a professor of criminology at Leiden University (1956–1976) and served as chairman of the publishing house De Bezige Bij from 1959 to 1972. He was also an active literary figure, editing journals like Podium and De nieuwe stem. His writing often explored themes of fascism, individual responsibility, and personal history.[1]
