Wolfgang Tillmans (born August 16, 1968, in Remscheid, West Germany) is a prominent German fine-art photographer known for his diverse body of work that investigates the foundations of the photographic medium and the social, political, and aesthetic dimensions of the everyday. He became widely recognized in the 1990s for his intimate portraits of youth culture and the gay scene in London and Berlin. Tillmans was the first photographer and first non-British artist to be awarded the Turner Prize in 2000. His practice encompasses a wide range of genres, including portraits, still lifes, abstract works, and large-scale installations. He is particularly noted for his 'Concorde' series, which documents the airplane through a grid of images, and his work with 'truth study center' table installations.
