Xu Xiaobing

photographer

Xu Xiaobing (1916–2009) was a prominent Chinese cinematographer, filmmaker, and photojournalist. He joined the Eighth Route Army in 1937 and became one of the most significant photographers of Mao Zedong. Alongside his wife, Hou Bo, he was commissioned by the Chinese Communist Party to create an official photographic record of Party leaders, battle scenes, and everyday life during the Second Sino-Japanese War and the early years of the People's Republic of China. Xu is noted for capturing both iconic propaganda images and intimate, candid moments of Mao Zedong's private life. He served as a member of the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles and was President of the Chinese Photographers' Association.[1,3]
