The first book by Ed van der Elsken completely in colour, published in 1977, is based predominantly on his travels for the Dutch monthly magazine Avenue. The book explores themes of love, particularly the love between man and woman as it exists worldwide, but transitions halfway through to the broader struggle for existence, which men and women experience in solidarity or as individuals. It is noted for its vivid, candid full-color photographs and intimate portrayal of humanity, including themes of happiness, sorrow, suffering, death, strife, and courage. The text and captions are in Dutch.
