During the second half of the 19th century, Breitner utilized self-made photographs of Amsterdam street scenes as a primary reference and source of inspiration for his paintings. The publication includes text accompanied by numerous illustrations (reproductions) of these works. It was published with support from the Genootschap Amstelodamum.
