Masscheroen

Masscheroen is a dramatic work by Belgian author Hugo Claus, first staged in 1967 at the Casino in Knokke. The play is a modern adaptation of the sixteenth-century miracle play 'Mariken van Nieumeghen', which features a 'wagenspel' (wagon play). In this version, Claus moves the action to contemporary times and incorporates modern themes, leading to significant controversy regarding its depiction of the Holy Trinity as three naked men. The publication in 1968 by De Bezige Bij includes numerous photographs by renowned art photographer Ed van der Elsken. Due to the provocative nature of the performance, Claus was famously charged with public indecency and blasphemy in May 1968.
