The Harlem Book of the Dead

€92.00
Beautiful and haunting book by the renowned Van Der Zee. Funeral rites and photographs from Harlem during the first half of the twentieth century. From the rear cover- "The Harlem Book of the Dead with its photographs, poems and text are more than representational reflections of mourning rites. They reveal the history of a time in Harlem, now past, when society cared for both the living and the dead, in the belief that we must preserve a standard of pride representing order high in spiritual and temporal values. There is a purging of sorrow in the very pageantry of funerals. Carelessness about death might reflect carelessness about life. The examples of ritual as presented in this volume are as universal as death - and there are Harlem's everywhere.
The Harlem Book of the Dead is a significant photographic record of Black funerary traditions and mourning rituals in Harlem during the early to mid-twentieth century. Captured through the lens of celebrated photographer James Van Der Zee, the volume features over three dozen portraits that illuminate the community's spiritual and temporal values regarding death. The book includes text by Camille Billops, which primarily consists of an interview with Van Der Zee conducted when he was 91 years old, as well as poetry by Owen Dodson inspired by the imagery. It serves as a poignant reflection on the history of Harlem, showcasing the pageantry of funerals and the preservation of dignity in mourning rites.
