Gruvarbetare i Wales

Photo essay by the Swedish filmmaker of a mining town in Wales. Text by Mikael Wiström.
Gruvarbetare i Wales (Miners in Wales) is a Swedish photo book featuring photography by Kjell-Åke Andersson and text by Mikael Wiström, published in 1977. The work provides a documentary look at the lives of coal miners in the Bargoed area of southern Wales. Inspired by the photography of Eugene Smith, Andersson spent two months traveling through the region to capture images of the local mining community, their living conditions, and the social environment surrounding the mines. The book is richly illustrated and serves as a historical record of industrial labor and rural life in Wales during the late 20th century. It captures both the physical toll of mining and the cultural identity of the workers who sustained the region's economy.
