PHOTOGRAPHS WITH WRITTEN TEXT

Duane Michals

€95.00
Exhibition catalogue of seventeen black-and-white photographs by Duane Michals, each accompanied by his handwritten text. Staged, narrative work in which the written words add what the image cannot show.
Black-and-white photographs, each paired with handwritten text, make up this exhibition catalogue of seventeen images by the American photographer Duane Michals. Michals worked in staged, conceptual photography: from the late 1960s he told stories through small sequences of prints and wrote by hand next to or on the pictures, adding what a photograph cannot show on its own, such as emotion, desire, death, memory and dream. He described the notes as questions rather than captions. The catalogue was edited by Jerven Ober and laid out by Henrik Barends, with the photographs supplied courtesy of the Sidney Janis Gallery in New York. It is an oblong softcover issued by a Dutch museum of modern art, and it presents the pairing of image and written word that became the best-known feature of his work.
