Photographs from women's prisons in six countries, from the Czech Republic and Russia to Senegal, showing the homes, friendships and daily routines women build in captivity.
Photographs from women's prisons in the Czech Republic, the United States, the Netherlands, Russia, England and Senegal show how women live in captivity. The prisons of each country have a recognisable atmosphere of their own: the Russian pictures are often oppressive, those from Senegal feel foreign, and the English prisons give a more easygoing impression. The similarities come through as well. The photographs show women who try to make life inside as bearable as possible, and they register with a sharp eye for detail the domestic atmosphere the women create, the friendships between them and the attention they continue to give to their appearance. Presented as the first photobook to tell the story of women's lives in captivity, it goes beyond journalistic reporting on a handful of prisons and shows an experience that women in prison share anywhere in the world.
