The work includes a detailed study of O'Sullivan's images, many of which were captured in remote locations like the Colorado River column and the Humboldt Mountains. As part of the Rephotographic Survey Project, Dingus also re-photographed several of these historic sites to provide contemporary context for O'Sullivan's early geological survey pictures.
