Exactitudes

€86.08
Including 40 new series. Inspired by interest in the striking dress codes of various social groups, Rotterdam-based photographer Ari Versluis and profiler Ellie Uyttenbroek have systematically documented numerous identities. They call their series Exactitudes : a contraction of exact and attitude . By registering their subjects in an identical framework they provide an almost scientific record of people s attempts to distinguish themselves from others by assuming a group identity. The apparent contradiction between individuality and uniformity is taken to such extremes that the artistic aspect dominates the purely documentary element. Rotterdam s heterogeneous street scene remains a major source of inspiration for them, although for this new edition, once again with 40 new series, they have also visited Milan, Beijing, Rio de Janeiro, Casablanca, Praia (Cabo Verde), New York, Bordeaux, London and Paris.
Exactitudes is a striking visual record documenting the dress codes and identities of various social groups, subcultures, and communities across the globe. Rotterdam-based photographer Ari Versluis and stylist/profiler Ellie Uyttenbroek have systematically documented these identities since 1994. The project captures people with similar aesthetics and obsessions—often perceived as underground or countercultural—and presents them in neat portraits displayed in a signature three-by-four grid. By registering subjects in an identical framework, the artists provide an almost scientific observation of human style and identity.
