Cary Markerink
photographer
Cary Markerink is a Dutch photographer known for his commissioned work for architects and art institutions, as well as his autonomous landscape photography. Born in Indonesia to a family that moved frequently between the Netherlands and Germany, he settled in the Netherlands permanently in 1965. He studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, where he began photographing seriously in the early 1970s. Markerink is noted for avoiding romanticized imagery in his landscapes, instead capturing contemporary environments in their true form. His career includes significant collaborations with Theo Baart on projects such as 'Nagele' and 'Snelweg'. He has received several awards, including the Maria Austria Prize in 1991.
