Doug Rickard
author · photographer
Doug Rickard (1968–2021) was an American artist and photographer known for his innovative use of digital technologies to explore the contemporary American landscape. He is best recognized for his book 'A New American Picture' (2010), which features images he captured by photographing Google Street View on computer monitors, creating a pixilated aesthetic that comments on socioeconomic inequality, surveillance, and the fractured nature of the American dream. Rickard was also the founder and publisher of the contemporary photography websites 'American Suburb X' and 'These Americans.' His work often focuses on marginalized communities and urban decay, reflecting his personal history in the San Francisco Bay Area and his academic background in sociology and United States history.[2,3,4]
