Esther Kroon

photographer

Esther Kroon (1966–1992) was a Dutch photographer known for her evocative and powerful portraits, particularly of children. She studied graphic design at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague before becoming an assistant to the world-renowned photographer Rineke Dijkstra at De Moor in Amsterdam. In 1988, she spent three months in Barcelona, where she began producing a series of child portraits that earned her a stipend from the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts. In 1989, she was commissioned by the Amsterdam City Archives to photograph children in the city, resulting in the documentary project 'Kinderen in de grote stad'. Her work is characterized by low viewpoints and a unique use of flash combined with daylight. Kroon's career was tragically cut short when she was murdered during a robbery in Antigua, Guatemala, in 1992 at the age of 25.[1,2,3]
