Jack Welpott
photographer
Jack Welpott (1923–2007) was a prominent American photographer and educator. Born in Kansas City, Kansas, he grew up in Bloomington, Indiana, where he began his interest in photography at age 13. He served in the South Pacific during World War II before earning one of the first M.F.A. degrees in photography from Indiana University in 1959. Welpott spent thirty-three years teaching photography at San Francisco State College (now San Francisco State University). His artistic work bridged documentary realism and psychological inquiry, notably through his nude studies of women and early documentary pictures of the Midwest. He was a member of the Friends of Photography and received several honors, including the Medal of Arles in 1973 and a National Endowment for the Arts Grant in 1979.[1,2,3,4]
