Jan Coppens

Jan Coppens (1937–2000) was a Dutch photographer, teacher, and a pioneering photo historian. He studied at the Akademie voor Industriële Vormgeving in Eindhoven, the Bayerische Staatslehranstalt für Photographie in Munich, and the École du Louvre in Paris. Coppens was the first photo historian in the Netherlands and Belgium to systematically research the development of photography. He published hundreds of articles and over ten books, notably 'Een camera vol stilte' (1976), 'De Bewogen camera' (1982), and 'Door de enkele werking van het licht' (1989). He also worked on the history of photography in Brabant, resulting in the exhibition and book 'Het licht van de 19de eeuw' (1997). He is often remembered for his meticulous archival research into the lives and works of early Dutch and Belgian photographers.[1,2]
