Jan Mankes

author · designer

Jan Mankes (1889–1920) was a Dutch painter and graphic artist known for his sensitive and quiet depictions of nature and rural life. Born in Meppel, he developed his artistic style while living in Delft and later in Friesland. His work is characterized by an intense attention to detail and a poetic atmosphere, often capturing the stillness of landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. Despite his short career, which was cut short by tuberculosis and the Spanish flu at the age of 30, he left behind nearly two hundred paintings and numerous drawings and prints. He is frequently described as one of Holland's most tranquil painters.[1,2,3,4,5,6]
