Peter Alma

author · designer

Peter Alma (1886–1969) was a prominent Dutch artist, designer, and muralist. Born in Medan, Indonesia, he studied at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and the Académie Humbert in Paris. Alma's work is characterized by a transition from Neo-Impressionism to Cubism, ultimately arriving at a constructive, socialist-influenced style. He is perhaps best known for his large-scale murals at Amsterdam's Amstel Station (1939), where he integrated modern design with public infrastructure. A pioneer in visual communication, Alma also developed 'beeldstatistieken' (visual statistics), a precursor to the Isotype system, which sought to make complex data accessible and aesthetically meaningful to the general public. His practice bridged the gap between fine art, graphic design, and industrial application.[1,2,3,4]
