author · photographer

Ralph Gibson is a renowned American photographer known for his surrealistic black-and-white images and high-contrast abstract compositions. Born in Hollywood to a father who was an assistant director to Alfred Hitchcock, Gibson's early exposure to film sets influenced his artistic path. He studied photography while serving in the U.S. Navy (1956–1960) and later attended the San Francisco Art Institute. His professional career began as an assistant to Dorothea Lange and Robert Frank. Gibson is celebrated for his narrative-driven approach, transforming everyday objects into evocative, dream-like imagery. He has published over 40 monographs, many through his own Lustrum Press, including 'The Somnambulist' (1970) and the 'Black Trilogy.' His work is held in over 200 museum collections worldwide. In recognition of his contributions to photography, he was inducted into the International Photography Hall of Fame in 2019 and received numerous honors, including the Knight of the Legion of Honor in 2018.[1,2]
