Sophie Calle
author · photographer
Sophie Calle is a French writer, photographer, installation artist, and conceptual artist. Born in Paris in 1953, she emerged on the art scene in the late 1970s, notably participating in the 1979 Paris Biennale with her work 'Les Dormeurs'. Her artistic practice is characterized by the construction of archives around 'true stories,' often involving the shadowing of strangers, personal investigations, and rituals. She frequently combines text and photography to explore themes of intimacy, surveillance, and the boundaries between public and private lives. A notable example of her methodology is 'L'Hôtel' (1984), where she spent three weeks working as a chambermaid in Venice to document the traces left by hotel guests.[1,2,3,4,5,6]
