Stephan Vanfleteren

photographer

Stephan Vanfleteren is a prominent Belgian photographer known for his penetrating black-and-white portraits and large-scale reportage. Born in Kortrijk in 1969, he studied photography at the Sint-Lucas Institute in Brussels. He began working as a freelance photographer in 1993, initially focusing on photojournalism for publications such as De Morgen, Paris Match, and Le Monde 2. His artistic style is characterized by sobriety and a focus on capturing character through minimalist composition. Vanfleteren has received numerous accolades, including the Louis Paul Boonprijs (2009) for his social commitment in art, the Henri Nannen Preis (2011) in Germany, and the National Portrait Prize (2012). In 2021, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. He is also a co-founder of the publishing houses Kannibaal and Hannibal.[1,2,3]
