Varvara Stepanova

Varvara Stepanova was a prominent Russian avant-garde artist and designer who significantly contributed to the development of Constructivism. Born in Kaunas (then Kovno) to a peasant family, she studied at the Kazan School of Art where she met her husband and collaborator Aleksandr Rodchenko. She became a key figure in the Moscow artistic community, working as a painter, graphic designer, theorist, and stage set designer. Her work emphasized functional art in service of post-revolutionary Soviet society, including textile designs and theatrical scenery.[1,2,3,4,5,6,7]
