Werner Bischof (1916–1954) was a prominent Swiss photojournalist and photographer known for his humanistic approach to documentary photography. He studied at the Zürich School of Applied Arts under Hans Finsler, graduating in 1936. In 1949, he became the first new member to join the founding group of Magnum Photos. His work is characterized by a strong sense of design, empathy, and sensitive use of light, documenting post-World War II Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
