Willem Arnoldus Witsen
photographer
Willem Arnoldus Witsen (1860–1923) was a prominent Dutch painter, etcher, and photographer associated with the Amsterdam Impressionism movement. He is particularly noted for his original photography, which often captured calm urban landscapes, agricultural scenes, and portraits of family and friends. His work was influenced by James McNeill Whistler, and he was known as a generous patron (mecenas) to many artists and writers of the 'Tachtigers' generation. Witsen maintained a floating studio on a barge in Amsterdam for much of his career, where he captured various cityscapes from the water.[1,2,3]
