This volume serves as the official catalogue for the exhibition of the collection of Hamburg photographer Robert Lebeck, which was acquired by the city of Cologne in 1993. The book provides a comprehensive overview of artistic and documentary photography from the 19th century, including portraiture, street life, architecture, and city documentation. It features numerous illustrations (mostly in black and white) and explores various photographic techniques such as carte-de-visite photography and early amateur photography in German-speaking countries. The work is edited by Bodo von Dewitz and Roland Scotti.
