Bagara

Bagara is a seminal photobook by the Dutch photographer Ed van der Elsken, published in 1958. The work provides a raw and deeply personal portrait of life in Central Africa, specifically focusing on regions that were then part of the Belgian Congo. Captured during his travels in 1957, the book features both black-and-white and color photographs that document the vitality, savagery, and daily realities of African tribes and landscapes. The publication is noted for its honest insight into life and death in the region at the time. It includes a text booklet with contributions from Jan Vrijman and was designed by Jurriaan Schrofer.
