Dutch-language exhibition booklet on John Heartfield's political photomontages, from his Dada beginnings to his AIZ work of 1930-1938 and his London exile.
A booklet on the photomontages of the German artist John Heartfield (1891-1968), made for an exhibition at Museum de Fundatie in Zwolle that ran from 20 September 2009 to 3 January 2010. It covers his work against National Socialism and for communism in the 1920s and 1930s. Heartfield came out of the Berlin Dada movement and developed photomontage into a political propaganda tool. Between 1930 and 1938 he made montages for the communist weekly Arbeiter Illustrierte Zeitung (AIZ), which the publisher presents as the high point of his career. The exhibition also included Dada-period works, book designs for Malik Verlag and a series of montages from his exile in London, shown for the first time. It was organised with the Akademie der Künste in Berlin, which holds Heartfield's estate. The text is by Ralph Keuning and is in Dutch. This is a short, illustrated, staple-bound softcover exhibition publication of 28 pages, in A4 format.
