Retrospective monograph of Amsterdam photographer Cor Jaring, covering the port and its dockworkers, the 1960s Provo scene and happenings, portraits, and travels from Indonesia to Spain. Preface by Job Cohen, introduction by Hedy d'Ancona.
The photographs follow Amsterdam photographer Cor Jaring through the 1960s and beyond. A large part of the book is about the port of Amsterdam: portraits of dockworkers, their heavy physical work, and the changing harbour. The book also covers the Amsterdam counterculture of the sixties, in which Jaring took part as a co-founder of the Dutch Provo movement and as a squatter at Ruigoord. It includes his pictures of Robert Jasper Grootveld's anti-smoke happenings, of Bart Huges drilling a hole in his forehead, and of the smoke-bomb incident at the 1966 wedding of Princess Beatrix and Claus von Amsberg. It also includes portraits such as the nude Phil Bloom and John Lennon and Yoko Ono at the Amsterdam Hilton. Other sections come from his travels to Indonesia and Japan, along the Hippie Trail to Afghanistan and Nepal, and through Spain, Italy, England and Germany. It is a retrospective monograph of one photographer, working in reportage, documentary and portrait modes. It has a preface by Job Cohen and an introduction by Hedy d'Ancona.
