Ninety color photographs by Theo Baart, Marnix Goossens, and Raimond Wouda document the Amsterdam garden city of Osdorp and its residents during the 2004–2012 urban renewal program, accompanied by an essay on the district's history by Willem van Toorn.
Ninety color photographs by Theo Baart, Marnix Goossens, and Raimond Wouda document the western Amsterdam garden city of Osdorp as a district in transition during its large-scale urban renewal. Commissioned by the Osdorp borough and co-produced with Eden Design & Communication, the publication examines a renovation program scheduled between 2004 and 2012 to refurbish or replace more than half of the neighborhood's housing stock, building on earlier urban renewal work. The visual series makes this physical transformation and its impact on local life tangible, providing a record to look back on once the work is complete: Baart brings an unsentimental eye to postwar housing estates, Goossens photographs the district's cultivated nature and green spaces, and Wouda focuses on residents in their everyday surroundings. An accompanying essay by Willem van Toorn traces the history and development of the postwar garden city while recalling his parents' years living in an Osdorp apartment block among neighbors from diverse backgrounds. Compiled and designed by Erwin Slaats and Robert Jan Telkers, with maps by Carta Studio.
