Freek van Arkel (1959–2020) was a dedicated Dutch photographer based in Rotterdam. He spent over three decades documenting the transformation of the city's harbor and industrial landscape. His work is characterized by an analytical approach to the changing world, capturing both the scale of maritime infrastructure and the human element of labor. Van Arkel studied at the Willem de Kooning Academy and later trained at the Academy for Fine Arts in Breda (1981–1986). He was known for his commitment to documenting reality without idealization, producing large-format color and black-and-white photographs that serve as a visual chronicle of Rotterdam's maritime history.[1,2,3]
