Hendricus Theodorus Wijdeveld

author · designer

Hendricus Theodorus Wijdeveld (1885–1987) was a prominent Dutch architect and graphic designer, best known as an influential figure of the Amsterdam School. He served as the editor-in-chief of 'Wendingen', a progressive architecture and art magazine published between 1918 and 1932. Wijdeveld's work is characterized by its groundbreaking approach to typography and architectural design. His notable projects include the Villa De Wachter (1922–1927) and various futuristic urban plans for Amsterdam. After a period of falling out of favor due to his perceived sympathies during the German occupation in 1940, he was rehabilitated following a major retrospective at the Stedelijk Museum in 1953. He also taught architecture in the United States between 1947 and 1952.[1,2]
