Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst (1868–1938) was a prominent Dutch painter, draftsman, lithographer, book cover designer, etcher, and writer. A key figure in the Dutch Symbolist movement, his work was characterized by an engagement with artistic ideals, craftsmanship, and social goals. He studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, where he later served as a teacher and director (1926–1934). Holst is well-known for his multifaceted contributions to Dutch art, including stained-glass designs, book illustrations, and posters. His work often reflected a modified Symbolist style, emphasizing aesthetic purity and the integration of various artistic disciplines.[1,2]
