Sem Presser
photographer
Sem Presser (1917–1986) was a renowned Dutch photojournalist and one of the pioneers of modern documentary photography in the Netherlands. He began his career as an apprentice to Sieg Vaz Dias before establishing his own press agency in 1937. During World War II, he worked underground, forging identity papers and providing shelter for Jewish refugees; he also photographed combat during Operation Market Garden. Post-war, Presser traveled extensively across the globe—including the South Pole, Vietnam, and various regions of Africa and the Americas—producing extensive reportages. He was a key figure in establishing photographers' rights in the Netherlands, serving as a board member for numerous photography organizations including the NVF (Nederlandse Vereniging van Fotojournalisten).[1,2]
