WILLEM RUYS de wereld rond

Carel Adriaan Blazer / Max Dendermonde

€30.00
Travel reportage photographs by Carel Blazer from a round-the-world voyage on the liner Willem Ruys, with text by Max Dendermonde, in leporello format. It has 15 colour and 24 black-and-white photographs and maps of the Panama and Suez canals.
The photographs follow a round-the-world voyage aboard the Rotterdamsche Lloyd liner Willem Ruys. They are shot on board and in port, in black and white and in colour. Carel Blazer made a journey around the world on the ship in 1959. A source describing that voyage lists calls at Egypt, Colombo, Singapore, Melbourne, Sydney, Peru, Panama, Miami and Bermuda. The approach is travel reportage, and the book appears to be a commissioned publication about the ship and its itinerary rather than an independent photographic monograph. The photographs are by Blazer. The text is credited to Max Dendermonde, the pseudonym of Hendrik Hazelhoff. A listing for a copy dated 1961 credits the design to Jurriaan Schrofer and names the Koninklijke Rotterdamsche Lloyd as publisher. Dating and imprint differ between sources: the 1959 first edition is attributed to Meijer's Industriële Uitgeverij, Wormerveer. The book is a leporello, a single accordion-folded strip bound between photo-pictorial paper-covered boards, about 13.5 x 17.5 cm. It has 15 colour and 24 black-and-white photographs, one colour drawing, and two colour maps of the Panama and Suez canals, drawn by F.W. Michels. An English-language edition was issued as To See the World: Willem Ruys.
