Ata Kando

author · photographer

Ata Kando (born Etelka Görög) was a prominent Hungarian-born Dutch photographer known for her diverse and courageous body of work. She began her photography practice in the 1930s, initially focusing on children's photography in Budapest before moving to Paris in 1932. Throughout her career, she worked as a fashion photographer and documented significant historical events, including photographing refugees in 1956. Her travels took her to the Amazon to capture landscapes and indigenous cultures, as well as to sites like Paestum. She is highly regarded for her poetic perspective and her ability to capture both the intimate and the epic. A notable milestone in her career was the creation of a dummy for 'Kalypso & Nausikaä' in 1956, which was eventually released as a published book in 2004. She is considered one of the first generation of great female Dutch photographers of the 20th century.[1,3,4,5]
